We’ve heard a lot from Tony Abbott in the three months since he became federal Opposition Leader. He is a seasoned player, a likeable bloke, and a “conviction politician.”
We know his views on abortion and premarital sex. Now he has spoken out on capital punishment, observing that some crimes are so horrific that the death penalty seems the only appropriate option.
There are strong arguments for and against capital punishment. Many claim that crimes such as genocide and drug trafficking should attract the death penalty, either as retribution or as a deterrent to others. But others view it as barbaric, inappropriate for a civilized society.
Perhaps we aren’t as civilized as some would wish. If terrorists were convicted of mass murder on Australian soil, the tide of public opinion would likely turn, and good people would find themselves baying for blood – understandable, but regrettable. God help us all.
