The United Nations Office of Drugs and Crime estimates that the commercial child sexual abuse industry generates approximately 50,000 new child sexual abuse images each year, and is worth about US$250 million. Most victims are white and female, and 69 per cent are younger than ten years old.

It appears that law enforcement catches as few as one per cent of all consumers of child sexual abuse materials. What we need is a range of measures to protect children, including compelling Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to block access to clients visiting sites containing sexual abuse material.

But the vast majority of Australian ISPs make no attempt to block access or to report criminal activity. We must not tolerate such amoral and unethical behaviour by Australian companies which choose to place profits before the protection of the most vulnerable in our community.

If you’d like to help change the law, sign the petition calling on the Government to pass laws requiring ISPs to block access to child pornography.

Broadcast on 2CH Sydney, 26 June 2011.

If you’ve walked into a newsagent, petrol station, or corner store recently, chances are you’ve seen “soft porn” magazines on sale, placed at children’s eye level, in close proximity to snack products that children are drawn to.

It’s designed to revive declining sales, but it could have the effect of normalising inappropriate values, grooming a new generation of consumers for a morally dubious product.

Now you can do something about it: simply sign an online petition asking the federal government to amend the law to ensure that all pornographic material is placed out of children’s reach and view. It’s a project organised by Say No 4 Kids, a community group with no ties to any religious, political or vested interest group.  But we can all give it our best shot.  So sign up, and defend the rights of Aussie kids.

Broadcast on 2CH Sydney, Sunday 11 April 2010.
