What did our Diggers fight for?

Last Monday the managing director of the Australian Christian Lobby, Jim Wallace, surprised many of us by posting a message on Twitter which read:

Just hope that as we remember Servicemen and women today we remember the Australia they fought for – wasn’t gay marriage and Islamic!

The statement was quickly condemned by those who love to hate the ACL and the Christian values it stands for. Of course, posting the message in a public forum, on ANZAC Day, was bound to create controversy. Some saw it as homophobic and racist.

But Mr Wallace was actually reflecting the sentiment of a large number of Australians who believe, with good reason, that the moral and spiritual ideals for which Australian service personnel have fought in past generations was different from the values of the anti-Christian homosexual lobby and the anti-Christian element of the Islamic community in Australia.

I think it’s fair to say that our Diggers, on the whole, were fighting for God and country, for justice and freedom, not for gay marriage and Islam. Australians know that.

Broadcast on 2CH Sydney, Sunday 1 May 2011.
