Morning prayer for Wednesday 20 August 2025

+ In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Pause for reflection

Good morning, heavenly Father.
We worship you, the creator and sustainer of the universe.

Good morning, Lord Jesus.
We worship you, Saviour and Lord of the world.

Good morning, Holy Spirit.
We worship you, sanctifier of the people of God.

One thing I have asked of the Lord,
this is what I seek:
that I may dwell in the house of the Lord
all the days of my life;
to behold the beauty of the Lord
and to seek Him in His temple.

Who is it that you seek?
We seek the Lord our God.
Do you seek Him with all your heart?
Amen. Lord, have mercy.
Do you seek Him with all your soul?
Amen. Lord, have mercy.
Do you seek Him with all your mind?
Amen. Lord, have mercy.
Do you seek Him with all your strength?
Amen. Christ, have mercy.

To whom shall we go?
You have the words of eternal life,
and we have believed and have come to know
that You are the Holy One of God.

Praise to You, Lord Jesus Christ,
King of endless glory.

Psalm 35:1-3, 17-18

Contend, Lord, with those who contend with me;
fight against those who fight against me.

Take up shield and armour;
arise and come to my aid.

Brandish spear and javelin
against those who pursue me.

Say to me,
“I am your salvation.”…

How long, Lord, will you look on?
Rescue me from their ravages,
my precious life from these lions.

I will give you thanks in the great assembly;
among the throngs I will praise you.

Genesis 29:16-25

Now Laban had two daughters; the name of the older was Leah, and the name of the younger was Rachel. Leah had weak eyes, but Rachel had a lovely figure and was beautiful. Jacob was in love with Rachel and said, “I’ll work for you seven years in return for your younger daughter Rachel.”

Laban said, “It’s better that I give her to you than to some other man. Stay here with me.” So Jacob served seven years to get Rachel, but they seemed like only a few days to him because of his love for her.

Then Jacob said to Laban, “Give me my wife. My time is completed, and I want to make love to her.”

So Laban brought together all the people of the place and gave a feast. But when evening came, he took his daughter Leah and brought her to Jacob, and Jacob made love to her. And Laban gave his servant Zilpah to his daughter as her attendant.

When morning came, there was Leah! So Jacob said to Laban, “What is this you have done to me? I served you for Rachel, didn’t I? Why have you deceived me?”

Pause for reflection

Loving God, You have surrounded us with a great cloud of witnesses, steadfast brothers and sisters in the faith who endured hardship and remained loyal to You.

Yet we are humbled by the weight of our own sin. We admit that we get tripped up by many things. We have not laid aside every burden.

At times, we have acted selfishly, harboured resentment, and allowed fear to get the better of us. We confess that we have taken our eyes off Jesus. Forgive us, Lord, for growing weary and losing heart.

Save us from shrinking back from Your victorious path that leads to peace. Cleanse our hearts from the sin that so easily entangles us. Renew in us the commitment to follow You closely.

We thank You for Your promise of full restoration and for the joy that is always possible in Jesus. Amen.

Today, we are praying for Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Mauritania, and Niger.

We are thankful for:

  • the  heritage of ancient trade routes, rich oral traditions and nomadic practices of people in the lands these countries now occupy
  • humanitarian work to improve food security and livelihoods, especially for women
  • pro-active efforts to preserve the environment in these desert lands
  • welcome and provision for those who often must flee across borders.

We pray for:

  • those impoverished who lack basic needs and rights, that these will be met
  • desperate children and others who turn to crime or begging or become enslaved
  • effective response to the frequent droughts and hunger in this area
  • more stable political rule in these countries to stem violence and provide for all.

We pray for:

  • world leaders, and justice and peace for our world
  • our federal, state and local politicians
  • our senior church leaders, ministers, pastors, teachers, and missionaries
  • our denomination, ministers, staff and volunteers
  • all the churches of our city or region
  • our local congregation and its ministries
  • the needs of our families and friends
  • our own personal needs, challenges and opportunities

Pause for reflection

Give me, good Lord, an humble, lowly, quiet, peaceable, patient, charitable, kind, tender, and pitiful mind, with all my works and all my words and all my thoughts, to have a taste of thy holy, blessed Spirit.

Give me, good Lord, a full faith, a firm hope, and a fervent charity, a love to thee incomparable above the love to myself.

Give me, good Lord, a longing to be with thee, not for the avoiding of the calamities of this world, nor so much for the attaining of the joys of Heaven, as for a very love of thee.

And bear me, good Lord, thy love and favor, which thing my love to theeward, were it never so great, could not but thy great goodness deserve.

These things, good Lord, that I pray for,
give me thy grace to labor for.

One true God, my disappointments reveal the shrine of idols I carry in my heart. When trophy spouses, promising careers, or picture-perfect families fail or are taken away, my heart’s true trust and affection are laid bare. Forgive me for all the things I’ve chased after in place of you. May the love of Jesus keep my mind, will, and heart fully set on you. Amen.

Matthew 6:9-13, NIV

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come, your will be done,

on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from the evil one.
For yours is the kingdom and the power
 and the glory forever. Amen.

Heavenly Father, we pray
that we may live this day in your presence
and please you more and more.

Lord Jesus, we pray that this day
we may take up our cross and follow you.

Holy Spirit, we pray that this day
you will fill us with yourself
and cause your fruit to ripen in our lives:
love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness,
faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.

Holy, blessed and glorious Trinity,
three persons in one God,
have mercy upon us. Amen.

Christ, as a light
illumine and guide me.
Christ, as a shield
overshadow me.
Christ under me;
Christ over me;
Christ beside me
on my left and my right.
This day be within and without me,
lowly and meek, yet all-powerful.
Be in the heart of each to whom I speak;
in the mouth of each who speaks unto me.
This day be within and without me,
lowly and meek, yet all-powerful.
Christ as a light;
Christ as a shield;
Christ beside me
on my left and my right.

May the peace of the Lord Christ go with you,
wherever He may send you.
May He guide you through the wilderness,
protect you through the storm.
May He bring you home rejoicing
at the wonders He has shown you.
May He bring you home rejoicing
once again into our doors.

+ In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
