Morning prayer for Wednesday 3 December 2025

+ In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Pause for reflection

Good morning, heavenly Father.
We worship you, the creator and sustainer of the universe.

Good morning, Lord Jesus.
We worship you, Saviour and Lord of the world.

Good morning, Holy Spirit.
We worship you, sanctifier of the people of God.

One thing I have asked of the Lord,
this is what I seek:
that I may dwell in the house of the Lord
all the days of my life;
to behold the beauty of the Lord
and to seek Him in His temple.

Who is it that you seek?
We seek the Lord our God.
Do you seek him with all your heart?
Amen. Lord, have mercy.
Do you seek him with all your soul?
Amen. Lord, have mercy.
Do you seek him with all your mind?
Amen. Lord, have mercy.
Do you seek him with all your strength?
Amen. Christ, have mercy.

To whom shall we go?
You have the words of eternal life,
and we have believed and have come to know
that you are the Holy One of God.

Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ,
King of endless glory.

Psalm 85:1-2, 8-13

You, Lord, showed favour to your land;
you restored the fortunes of Jacob.

You forgave the iniquity of your people
and covered all their sins…

I will listen to what God the Lord says;
he promises peace to his people, his faithful servants —
but let them not turn to folly.

Surely his salvation is near those who fear him,
that his glory may dwell in our land.

Love and faithfulness meet together;
righteousness and peace kiss each other.

Faithfulness springs forth from the earth,
and righteousness looks down from heaven.

The Lord will indeed give what is good,
and our land will yield its harvest.

Righteousness goes before him
and prepares the way for his steps.

Matthew 24:36-44

36 ‘Now concerning that day and hour no one knows – neither the angels of heaven nor the Son except the Father alone. 37 As the days of Noah were, so the coming of the Son of Man will be. 38 For in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day Noah boarded the ark. 39 They didn’t know until the flood came and swept them all away. This is the way the coming of the Son of Man will be. 40 Then two men will be in the field; one will be taken and one left. 41 Two women will be grinding grain with a hand mill; one will be taken and one left.

42 Therefore be alert, since you don’t know what day your Lord is coming. 43 But know this: If the homeowner had known what time the thief was coming, he would have stayed alert and not let his house be broken into. 44 This is why you are also to be ready, because the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.

Pause for reflection

“Search me, O God, and know my heart;
test me and know my thoughts.
See if there is any wicked way in me,
and lead me in the way everlasting.

God, I pray these words of the psalmist with great hesitation.
They are devastatingly honest.
They lay things so bare.
They allow no room for negotiation or compromise.
I fear the scrutiny.
I dread the probe.
I resist the intrusion.
I know that you are all love and so I am entering
nothing more than your scrutiny of love. And yet…
No! I refuse to allow my fears to keep me from your love.
Search me, O God, and know my heart;
test me and know my thoughts.
See if there is any wicked way in me,
and lead me in the way everlasting. Amen.

Today, we are praying for Brunei, Malaysia and Singapore.

We give thanks for:

  • Protestant, Catholic, Orthodox and evangelical churches and councils of churches in Malaysia and Singapore which have witnessed to the gospel and ministered to groups who are discriminated against and marginalized
  • economic developments that have enhanced the standard of living for many
  • policies and practices that seek to sustain the environment and its resources
  • those who have sought to further ethnic and religious harmony.

We pray for:

  • more just, participatory and democratic rule
  • locally-determined economic development that lessens inequalities and protects natural resources
  • greater ethnic and religious understanding and cooperation
  • the forging of national identities and visions that genuinely include all the diverse people in these countries.

In our own place in the world, we pray for:

  • all whose decisions involve questions of justice, mercy and peace
  • federal, state and local politicians
  • church leaders, ministers, pastors, teachers, and missionaries
  • all the churches of our city or region
  • our local congregation and its ministries
  • our local communities, businesses, and schools
  • the needs of our families and friends
  • our personal needs, challenges and opportunities

Pause for reflection

O King of the nations, You are the headstone of the glorious hall of creation.
You are the firm mortar which holds the building together.
Throughout the earth people marvel at Your works….
O just and faithful King, You can unlock the prison-house of sin,
and let us out into the glorious freedom of love.

Now we sit in darkness, grieving over the wrongs we have committed.
We long for the sun, we yearn for the warmth and brightness of Your truth….
Come now, high King of heaven. Come to us in flesh and bone….
Bring peace to us….
Do not forget us, but show mercy on us.
Impart to us Your everlasting joy,
so that we, who are fashioned by Your hands,
may praise Your glory.
Amen.

—The Exeter Book (c. 950)

Unexpected Savior, you are coming again, but this date, already marked down by the Father, isn’t for me to know.

But I’m curious, Lord, desiring a timeline or diagram, wanting to nail down a future that’s out of my hands. In place of my faithless need to control, give me a watchful heart full of expectation and wonder. Amen.

Matthew 6:9-13, NIV

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come, your will be done,

on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from the evil one.
For yours is the kingdom and the power
 and the glory forever. Amen.

Pause for reflection

Heavenly Father, we pray
that we may live this day in your presence
and please you more and more.

Lord Jesus, we pray that this day
we may take up our cross and follow you.

Holy Spirit, we pray that this day
you will fill us with yourself
and cause your fruit to ripen in our lives:
love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness,
faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.

Holy, blessed and glorious Trinity,
three persons in one God,
have mercy upon us. Amen.

Christ, as a light, illumine and guide me.
Christ, as a shield, overshadow me.
Christ under me; Christ over me;
Christ beside me on my left and my right.
This day be within and without me,
lowly and meek, yet all-powerful.
Be in the heart of each to whom I speak;
in the mouth of each who speaks unto me.
This day be within and without me,
lowly and meek, yet all-powerful.
Christ as a light; Christ as a shield;
Christ beside me on my left and my right.

May the peace of the Lord Christ go with you,
wherever He may send you.
May He guide you through the wilderness,
protect you through the storm.
May He bring you home rejoicing
at the wonders He has shown you.
May He bring you home rejoicing
once again into our doors.

+ In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
